Save this shack

Small is green

This tiny abode in Vernon, BC needs a new owner. Common wisdom would say knock this tiny treasure down and build a new house. In fact, the realtor says, "probably more suited to a complete re-construction as the location and view support effort." But I'm beginning to believe there are people who would see the potential of creating a home here. Call them minimalists, tiny house enthusiasts, environmentalists, or down-sizers - are there enough out there to change the fate of houses like this? Could we actually have an impact in the real estate market?

Small is affordable

Listed at $164,000, this home will cost you about the same as a lot. With 20% down, and a 5-year term at 4%, your mortgage payment would be $692, probably about the same amount you'd pay to rent a 1 bedroom apartment. And you get a fantastic 50x125 lot to grow veggies. Single family homes in Vernon average about $350,000.
